{"id":211,"date":"2022-09-30T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T12:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.ryanfatica.com\/?p=211"},"modified":"2024-07-08T12:22:55","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T12:22:55","slug":"alabama-prisoners-explain-why-theyre-striking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.ryanfatica.com\/?p=211","title":{"rendered":"Alabama Prisoners Explain Why They\u2019re Striking"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Ryan Fatica<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prisoners across Alabama launched a coordinated work stoppage Monday, refusing to attend their work assignments and essentially shutting down normal operations of the prison system in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the exact number of prisoners on strike is unknown, an outside organizer with prisoner support group Both Sides of the Walls estimates that about 80% of Alabama prisoners have participated in the strike. On Wednesday, the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/unicornriot.ninja\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Media-Advisory-Inmate-Worker-Stoppages-9-28-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">admitted<\/a> that strikes were occurring at <strong>\u201cmost major male facilities.\u201d<\/strong> There are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.state.al.us\/docs\/MonthlyRpts\/July%202022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approximately 16,000<\/a> prisoners assigned to major male facilities in Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inhumane conditions in Alabama prisons have been <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/20140604\/cruel-confinement-abuse-discrimination-and-death-within-alabamas-prisons\" target=\"_blank\">extensively documented<\/a>, including in a 2019 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/case-document\/file\/1149971\/download\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Justice report<\/a> that found that the ADOC <strong>\u201cdoes not reasonably protect prisoners from rampant violence\u201d<\/strong> and sexual abuse, and that conditions in Alabama prisons <strong>\u201cviolate the Constitution.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Photo by Zariya Williams]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unicornriot.ninja\/2022\/alabama-prisoner-strike-continues-into-fifth-day\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ryan Fatica Prisoners across Alabama launched a coordinated work stoppage Monday, refusing to attend their work assignments and essentially shutting down normal operations of the prison system in the state.
